The Truth About ‘Non‑Toxic’ Candles & Fragrances (What to Use Instead)
Most candles—even "natural" ones—release toxins when burned. Here is what is actually safe.
Candles create ambiance, sure. But if you knew what some of them were putting into your air, you might rethink that nightly ritual.
We used to burn candles every evening without thinking. Then we learned that cheap paraffin candles were basically releasing the same fumes as car exhaust. That was the end of that.
The problem with paraffin

Paraffin wax is petroleum-based (literally a byproduct of crude oil refining). When burned, it releases benzene and toluene—both are known carcinogens.
Add synthetic fragrances (which often contain phthalates and other unlisted chemicals), and you are basically running a mini chemical factory in your living room every time you light one.
The worst part: most candles do not list ingredients. "Soy blend" often means mostly paraffin with a tiny bit of soy for marketing.
Better candle options

If you want to keep candles, choose these:
- Beeswax candles (naturally purify air by releasing negative ions, smell subtly like honey, no synthetic additives)
- 100 percent soy candles (not soy blends—read the label carefully)
- Coconut wax (clean burn, minimal soot, sustainable)
What to look for on the label:
- Cotton or wood wicks (never lead—yes, some candles still use lead wicks)
- Essential oil-scented or completely unscented
- "Phthalate-free" explicitly stated (if they do not say it, assume it has phthalates)
Beeswax is our favorite. It actually cleans the air while burning and lasts way longer than paraffin or soy.
Even safer: skip candles entirely

We switched to these alternatives and honestly do not miss candles:
- Essential oil diffuser (ultrasonic or reed diffuser—no heat, no smoke, adjustable scent)
- Simmer pot (water plus citrus peels plus cinnamon on the stove—smells incredible, zero chemicals)
- Open windows (fresh air beats fake scent every single time)
A simmer pot is our go-to for guests. It makes the house smell amazing without any burning or chemicals. Just do not forget it is on the stove (we have done that more than once).

If you love candles, upgrade to beeswax or 100 percent soy. If you are open to alternatives, try a diffuser or simmer pot. Your lungs (and your air quality) will thank you either way.
