The ‘Low‑Tox’ Shopping List: Staples You’ll Rebuy All Year
Once you have made the switch to low-tox living, the real question becomes: what do I actually keep buying?
This is the short list of staples we come back to again and again. Build your pantry around these and you are 90 percent of the way there.
Cleaning essentials

- White vinegar (buy the 5L bulk — cheaper and lasts forever)
- Baking soda (multipacks from the supermarket)
- Castile soap (1L refill bottles — Dr. Bronner's or similar)
- Essential oils (tea tree, lemon, lavender — a little goes a long way)
- Microfibre cloths (replace every 6 months or when they start to smell)
We keep these stocked and rarely need anything else for day-to-day cleaning.
Personal care

- Natural deodorant (once you find one that works, stick with it)
- Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide-based — we use it year-round)
- Fragrance-free body lotion
- Shampoo bar or low-tox liquid shampoo
- Bamboo toothbrush + fluoride-free toothpaste (if that is your preference)
Kitchen staples

- Glass food storage containers (Glasslock, Pyrex — buy once, use forever)
- Stainless steel water bottles
- Beeswax wraps (replace cling film)
- Cast iron or stainless steel cookware (investment pieces, but worth it)
Laundry

- Fragrance-free laundry powder (Earth Choice, Ecostore — both widely available)
- White vinegar (fabric softener replacement — works better than you would think)
- Wool dryer balls (skip dryer sheets entirely)
Budget tips
Buy in bulk where possible — vinegar, baking soda, and castile soap all have long shelf lives.
Stock up during sales at Chemist Warehouse, or order from bulk suppliers like Biome or The Source Bulk Foods.

The upfront cost might feel higher, but these staples last months (sometimes a year), so the cost-per-use is actually lower than conventional products.
This is not about having the "perfect" pantry. It is about keeping a handful of reliable staples on hand so you are not constantly running out or making emergency supermarket trips.
