Bathroom Deep Clean, Low‑Tox Style (A Room‑by‑Room Checklist)

Bathroom Deep Clean, Low‑Tox Style (A Room‑by‑Room Checklist)

The bathroom sees a lot of moisture, grime, and mold. Here is how to tackle it without harsh chemicals.

When we first ditched conventional bathroom cleaners, we worried nothing else would cut through soap scum and mildew. Turns out, a few simple ingredients work better—and they do not leave that chemical smell that lingers for hours.

What you will need

  • White vinegar (the workhorse)
  • Baking soda (gentle abrasive)
  • Castile soap (for general cleaning)
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3 percent (for mold)
  • Microfiber cloths (reusable, effective)
  • Old toothbrush (for grout and tight corners)

These six things cover every surface in your bathroom. No need for separate tile cleaner, grout cleaner, mirror spray, or toilet bowl gel.

Toilet

Bowl:

Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda around the bowl, pour in 1 cup vinegar, let it fizz for 10 minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush. Flush.

Exterior:

Spray with vinegar plus water (1:1 ratio), wipe with microfiber cloth. Done.

We do this weekly and have never had staining or buildup. The fizzing action does the work for you.

Shower and Tub

Soap scum:

Spray with undiluted vinegar, wait 5 minutes, then scrub with a paste of baking soda and water. Rinse thoroughly.

Mold and mildew:

Spray hydrogen peroxide (do not dilute it—use it straight from the bottle), let sit for 10 minutes, scrub with a brush, then rinse. For stubborn mold, repeat.

Grout:

Make a thick paste with baking soda and water, apply with an old toothbrush, scrub in circular motions. For tough stains, use hydrogen peroxide instead of water in your paste.

The hydrogen peroxide trick was a game-changer for us. It is the only thing that cleared black mold from our shower grout without bleach fumes.

Sink and Mirrors

Sink:

A few drops of castile soap on a damp cloth, wipe down, rinse, dry with microfiber.

Mirrors:

Vinegar plus water (1:1) in a spray bottle, wipe with a dry microfiber cloth (lint-free shine).

Floors

Sweep or vacuum first to remove hair and dust. Then mop with 1 gallon hot water plus quarter cup castile soap plus 10 drops tea tree oil (antibacterial and smells clean without being overpowering).

Final tips

  • Run the exhaust fan during and after showers (prevents mold growth)
  • Hang towels to dry fully between uses
  • Clean weekly to prevent buildup (10 minutes weekly beats 2 hours monthly)

A clean bathroom does not need to smell like chemicals. If it smells clean, it probably just smells like... nothing. And that is exactly the point.
